What is a barcode? A UPC or Universal Product Code (also known as GTIN-12) is a series of lines or bars of various widths that represent a series of numbers. The numbers below the bars depict what number the bars represent. When scanned at a retail location, the barcode is read within that retailer’s inventory system. The scan will come up with the corresponding product name and price previously entered into that retailers system. The UPC Code is a unique identification for your product. How does my barcode get associated with the retailer or distributor? Once you purchase your barcode(s), you either print or affix a pre-printed barcode label on your product. You then supply the retailer a list of the barcode numbers for your product and their corresponding descriptions. The retailer or distributor enters that information into their inventory system and would fix a price. When the product is scanned, the scanner reads the barcode, and the product’s price and description is revealed. How many barcodes do I need? You need an individual barcode for each unique product that you are selling. This allows the retailer to exactly identify and track products. For example if you are selling two colors of shoes in five sizes, you would need ten individual barcodes. Quantity discounts are available for bulk orders. How do I purchase from UPCBarcodes.biz? You can place your order directly on-line from our secure site using a credit card, you can call in your order by phone, or you can mail us a check or money order along with a completed order form. What happens when I complete my purchase? Once you order has been received, you will receive an email confirmation of your purchase. UPCBarcodes.biz then assigns your UPC barcode numbers from our database of official GS-1 issued barcodes. Your order is then transferred to our graphics department to generate a digital image of your codes. Your individual UPC barcode(s) will then be sent you as an attachment. What exactly do I get? A .PDF copy of our actual UCC/GS1US company certificate. A .PDF copy of the legal agreement, listing the numbers you have purchased and listing you as the legal buyer. A text file listing your complete UPC number strings. This makes listing on the large online retailer a snap - they don't want the codes themselves, just the numbers, so you only have to copy and paste. A .zip file of your barcode images. These can be printed on labels or imported into packaging layouts. How long does it take for my order to get processed? The turn around time on purchases us usually within one business day. Could I get help putting barcodes on my product? If you need to have pre-printed UPC labels, you can order from our “Labels” tab on this site. Turnaround time for printed labels is normally one business day. What are the dimensions of a UPC barcode? The nominal size of a UPC symbol is 1.469" wide x 1.02" high. The minimum recommended size is 80% of the nominal size or 1.175" wide. The maximum recommended size is 200% of the nominal size or 2.938" wide. Width is much more important than height. The width influences the distance between the bars and how well the laser can distinguish between them.
